Musicians: Trombone: Julian Priester; Bass: Heshima Mark Williams; Drums: Augusta Collins; Guitar: Makoto Horiuchi; Saxophones: Davoud David Johnson.
This tape is a concert that the Marine Intrusion gave at the College of Marin. Marin Intrusion was a band led Julian Priester who is one of the masters of the music. Julian’s career spans from doing dates on the Chess label with the likes of Muddy Waters to playing with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Sun Ra, Eddie Palmieri, and Herbie Hancock.
The approach in this band is very different from any that i ever played in. It is very organic like it is bubbling out of the earth. The drummer Augusta Lee Collins who has passed (RIP) is an amazing and innovative drummer creating a soundscape of sound and rhythm. Overall the band created a tapestry of sound on which the soloists improvised on. Unfortunately, the mike was not placed in a good place to hear the whole band, and Davoud can’t be heard that clearly. In spite of this we can hear the energy and sound of the band. So strap yourself in and fasten your seat belt because this music takes one to a different place. Enjoy!
Again for the Audiogeeks
I converted the files to 24bit 44.1 audio files, but the software used for the internet is only compatible with the 16bit mp3 format so the sound is a little compressed. This session was transferred from a cassette tape recorded on a Tascam TC-D5M which was the state of the art at the time. The cassette recorder came with a stereo microphone and if placed right it was a amazing machine. Given all these limitations I felt that the spirit of the performance and the aura of the times comes through the recording. I felt that the performance needed to be heard by those who would be interested. I hope you enjoy it.
